Robert Conrad - Memories of the Wall
Nov 8th - Jan 11th
In the late 80s and 1990 Robert Conrad extensively photographed the Berlin Wall.
The photos document the brutal incision of the city at the centre of the Cold War – both above ground and below. As the Berlin underground public transport system was run by West Berlin serving West Berlin, the sealed off and heavily patrolled ‘ghost stations’ below East Berlin territory were a quasi underground extension of the Wall and death strip above.
30 years after they were taken Robert Conrad's photos don't just take us back to a momentous episode of 20th century history. They also take on an awkward topicality at a time when across the Western world the post war liberal values we have grown up with are increasingly undermined and called into question by populist movements at both ends of the political spectrum.
The exhibition will be accompanied by the hardcover photo book ‘Echoes of a Building published in the Albumen Gallery Publishing Series. Order the book
