New Life in America - A Journey in Kodachrome
15. 5. - 23. 6.
In 1959 a Swiss scientist and his young family embark on a journey to a new life in the USA. A keen and gifted photographer he documents the journey to their new home country and life there with his camera.
Nearly 60 years later the resulting collection of photos simultaneously achieves three things. In a first instance they tell one family's story in pictures. On another level they provide us a with a fascinating historical snapshot of life in the late 50s & early 60s - characteristically set in the warm hue of Kodachrome colours of the day. Above all, the images that compel not through dramatic content but through honest understated portrayal, composition and execution that betray an artistic eye, are an aesthetic jewel of mid-century photography.
The photos for this exhibition have kindly been made available to Albumen Gallery by custodians of a private family archive.
